30 year sentence for nonviolent drug offense  •  in prison for 17 years  •  Pres. Obama commuted on August 30, 2016  

Tyrie Bell was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison. His crime: He sold pellets of crack to an undercover informant. Tyrie spent 17 years locked up, but he used his time wisely. He enrolled in college correspondence classes, earned a 3.7 GPA and received his associate’s degree in Business Management, all while working 10,000 hours in the federal prison’s work program.

President Obama commuted Tyrie’s 30-year sentence on August 30, 2016. In the year since his release, Tyrie earned his commercial driver’s license. Tyrie enjoys his freedom as a truck driver on America’s open roads.
