life sentence for 24-year old nonviolent drug offender • in prison 22 years • Pres. Obama commuted on Dec. 19, 2015 • works for City of Chicago Transit Authority

Before his federal life sentence, Alton Mills had never been to prison. He was a young husband with an infant daughter. Alton was also a low-level drug runner. The mandatory minimum law required Alton to forfeit the entire balance of his life’s freedom. The judge assigned to Alton’s case called the punishment “cruel and unusual” for such a minor offender.  Alton Mills served 22 years of his life sentence. President Obama ordered his freedom on December 19, 2015. Today, Alton enjoys spending time with his family and, most of all, his first grandchild – a baby girl!
