Before his federal life sentence, Alton had never been sentenced to a single day in prison. He was a low-level drug runner. The mandatory minimum law required the judge to impose a life sentence. The judge called the punishment “cruel and unusual” for such a minor offender. Alton Mills served 22 years of a mandatory federal life sentence before President Obama commuted his sentence on December 19, 2015. Today, Alton enjoys spending time with his family and, most of all, his first grandchild – a baby girl!
